Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `keep somebody unaware, escape notice, be unknown, unnoted; make somebody forget something', midd. `forget, ' (details on the use of the forms in Schwyzer 699 a. 748).Other forms: λήθω ( ληθάνω η 221), aor. Aeol. Compounds: also with prefix. esp. ἐπι-.Derivatives: A. from λαθεῖν. λάθρη, -ᾱ adv. `secretly' (Il.; λάθρᾰ h. Cer. 240) with λαθραῖος `secret' (IA.). λάθριος (S. Ichn. 66 [lyr.], hell.), - ίδιος, - ιμαῖος (late) `id.'; adv. λαθρᾰ́-δᾱν (Corinn.; like κρυφᾰ́-δᾱν), λαθρη-δόν, - δά, - δίς (late); as 1. member λαθρο-, e.g. λαθρό-νυμφος `secretly married' (Lyc.), for the older variant λᾰθι-, e. g. λαθι-κηδής (X 83), prop. "at which the sorrows remain hidden" but also with the verb directly associated: `making sorrows forgotten' (s. Schwyzer 447, Bechtel Lex. s. v.); cf. λᾱθι- s. C. - 2. λαθητικός `who avoids notice' (Arist.; λάθησις sch. Gen. A 36) ; 3. λάθος n. `forgetfulness' (NGr. for *λῆθος, λᾶθος s. B.). - B. From λήθειν: 1. λήθη, Dor. λάθα `forgetfulness' (Β 33; cf. Porzig Satzinhalte 233) with ληθαῖος `making forgotten, forgetful' (Call., Lyc.), also ληθήμων, ληθώδης, λήθιος (H.). 2. λᾶθος n. = λήθη (Theoc.); λαθοσύνα f. `id.' (E. IT 1279, uncertain, cf. Wyss - συνη 42). 3. ληθεδών, - όνος f. `id.' (AP, APl.) with ληθεδανός = ληθαῖος (Luc.); Chantraine Form. 361 f. 4. ἔκ-λη-σις (ω 485), ἐπί-λᾱ-σις (Pi. P. 1, 46) `forgetting', from ἐκ-, ἐπι-λήθειν; besides from the simplex the typologically older λῆσ-τις `id.' (S., E.); Schwyzer 504, Chantraine 276, Holt Les noms d'action en - σις 36 f., Porzig Satzinhalte 196. -- 5. λήσ-μων `forgeting, forgetful' (Them.) with λησμοσύνη (Hes. Th. 55; after μνημοσύνη; also S. Ant. 151); ἐπιλήσ-μων `id.' (Att.) with ἐπιλησμον-ή, - μοσύνη (Crat., LXX), ἐπιλησμον-έω, λησμον-έω (M.- a. NGr.); details in Georgacas Glotta 36, 167f. (not always correct). - C. As 1.member in verbal governing compp.: 1. λησί-μβροτος `taking men unawares, deceiver' (h. Merc.; Zumbach Neuerungen 24); 2. λᾱθί-πονος `forgetting (making forgotten) sorrows' (S.; cross with λᾰθι-; Schwyzer 444); 3. λᾱθ-άνεμος `escaping the wind' (Simon.).Etymology: On ἀληθής, λήθαργος s. vv.; cf. also ἄλαστος. As basis of the Greek system serves the present λήθω, λά̄θω; beside this stands from the beginning the thematic zero grade aorist λᾰθεῖν and λελᾰθεῖν, - έσθαι with the perf. midd. λέλασμαι and isolated nominal derivv., esp. the couple λάθ-ρᾱ: λαθ-ι- (Schwyzer 447 f.); also the nasalpresent λα-ν-θ-άνω (beside λήθω which is in Hom. better attested) is perhaps an innovation (after μαθεῖν: μανθάνω?; Kuiper Nasalpräs. 156). -As in πύθω (: πύος), βρίθω (: βριαρός) also in λήθω the - θ- can be isolated as an added (present) element; a dentalless form seems indeed found in λῃ̃το ἐπελάθετο (beside λήιτο ἐπε\<λά\> θετο) H. (on - ι- s. below). Thus connection with the synonymous Lat. lă-t-eō `be hidden' becomes probable (cf. for the formation the opposite păt-eō; s. also on δατέομαι). - Other combinations are because of the meaning either very uncertain or wrong: Toch. A lä(n)t-, B lät-, lant- `go out' (Pedersen Tocharisch 173), Slav.: OCS lajati ' ἐνεδρεύειν', Tchech. lákati `persecute' (hard to separate from identical verbs meaning ' ὑλακτεῖν' resp. `desire'; Germ. nouns as OWNo. lōmr `treason, deceit', OHG luog `hole, lair'. - For an original long diphthong lāi- are both λαίθαργος (which is Pre-Greek, s. v.) and λῃ̃το unreliable evidence; can λῃ̃το be from *l̥h₂-to? - On Λητώ s. v. - Further forms in Pok. 651, W.-Hofmann s. lateō.Page in Frisk: 2,80-82Greek-English etymological dictionary

¿To see, to watch o to look?
A menudo se usa con can o could: I can see the mountains from my bedroom. Puedo ver las montañas desde mi dormitorio.
To look at implica una acción deliberada: I saw an old atlas, so I opened it and looked at the maps.
I watched the planes in the sky with great interest. Igualmente puede indicar el paso del tiempo (we watched the animals playing for half an hour, durante media hora observamos cómo jugaban los animales), movimiento (they stood there watching the cars drive off into the distance, se quedaron allí de pie viendo cómo se marchaban los coches) o vigilancia (the policemen have been watching this house because they thought we were thieves, los policías estaban vigilando la casa porque pensaban que éramos ladrones).
Para hablar de películas u obras de teatro usamos to see: Have you seen Hamlet?, ¿Has visto Hamlet? To watch se refiere a la televisión y los deportes en general: I always watch the television in the evening. Siempre veo la televisión por las noches. I like to watch football. Me gusta ver el fútbol. Al hablar de programas o partidos específicos podemos usar tanto to watch como to see: I like to see/watch the news at 9:00. Me gusta ver las noticias a las 9.00. Did you see/watch the match last night?, ¿Viste el partido anoche?

15 gravitas
•• John Edwards: A charismatic newcomer seemed just what the [Democratic] party was looking for – until 9/11 put a premium on gravitas.
•• With its black marble gravitas, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington tells the anguished story of how America got sucked in deeper and deeper, with the death toll rising along with the memorial’s V-shaped design. (New York Times)
1. Substance; weightiness: a frivolous biography that lacks the gravitas of its subject. 2. A serious or dignified demeanor: “Our national father figure needs gravitas, [but] he’s pitched himself as the kid brother.” (John Leo, Mother Jones).
•• По существу значение одно, и его неплохо, на мой взгляд, схватывает определение в онлайновом словаре www.dictionary.com: High seriousness (as in a person’s bearing or in the treatment of a subject).
•• Интересные рассуждения об этом слове – на сайте www.quinion.com (Michael Quinion writes about international English from a British viewpoint):
•• Ever since George W. Bush picked Richard Cheney as his running mate, the candidates in the American presidential race have been vying to see who can demonstrate the greatest gravitas, or appearance of dignity and seriousness. The Washington Times earlier this month called it the “ gravitas gambit,” and Rush Limbaugh has been having fun playing recordings to illustrate how it has become the media buzzword of the campaign.
•• <...> A weighty word indeed, the opposite of levity, a lightness that causes bodies to rise, a tendency for people to exhibit lightweight attitudes. <...>
•• In the past couple of decades, it has become accepted as a proper English word, is now printed without the italics, and has become more popular. There are signs that it is losing some of its force: a headline in the financial pages of the Daily Telegraph last month shouted that “ Vodafone provides the gravitas,” meaning only that the mobile phone company’s excellent share performance was propping up the stock market.
Princeton Packet Online:
•• In an effort to be included within the spirit of inclusion characterizing the upcoming presidential election. I contracted with myself to do a poll asking whether the town of Princeton has “gravitas.” Defined as reservedness, dignity, good taste, legitimacy, propriety, seriousness, thoughtful decision-making, gravitas is being touted as a crucial quality for those who intend to lead America into the 21st century.
В контексте возможны и другие варианты, например, Our national father figure needs gravitas.
•• And we want to tell our readers about sharp, clever books, utterly lacking in gravitas, that we know will delight them on the beach or the bus. (Benjamin Schwarz. Some of the best books of 2001) – Мы хотим рассказать о книгах, написанных бойко и толково, но при этом совершенно легковесных, которые наверняка доставят вам удовольствие на пляже или в автобусе.
•• Vodafone provides the gravitas –

happily ['hæpɪlɪ]∎ I could live here very happily je serais très heureux ici;∎ we were sitting there quite happily watching television nous étions installés tout tranquillement devant la télévision;∎ they lived happily ever after (at end of fairy tale) ≃ ils vécurent heureux et eurent beaucoup d'enfants;∎ I thought that when you got married you lived happily ever after je croyais que quand on se mariait, on vivait heureux jusqu'à la fin de ses jours;∎ I always thought you two were happily married j'ai toujours pensé que vous étiez un couple heureux∎ she said she would happily give her consent elle a dit qu'elle donnerait volontiers son accord ou qu'elle serait heureuse de donner son accord;∎ I could quite happily live here je me verrais très bien vivre ici;∎ I could quite happily strangle him j'ai bien envie de l'étrangler;∎ he'll quite happily say one thing and do the opposite ça ne le gêne pas de dire une chose et de faire exactement le contraire∎ happily, no one was hurt heureusement, il n'y a pas eu de blessés(d) (appropriately) heureusement, avec bonheur;∎ a very happily chosen turn of phrase une tournure de phrase très heureuseⓘ And they all lived happily ever after Il s'agit de la formule qui clôt tous les contes de fées en anglais ("et tous vécurent heureux pour toujours"), dont l'équivalent français est "ils vécurent heureux et eurent beaucoup d'enfants". Aujourd'hui on utilise cette phrase de façon allusive et parfois sur le mode sarcastique, comme dans l'exemple suivant: Neil and Maggie were supposed to live happily ever after but actually divorced after six months ("Neil et Maggie étaient censés vivre heureux et avoir beaucoup d'enfants mais finalement ils ont divorcé au bout de six mois").
